Round 3 VS Mac Uni

1st Grade Rd 3 vs Mac Uni

Mac Uni 8/321(dec) def by WCC 8/322

This report gives me great pleasure to write after all the effort our club has put in during Fatness and Pre Season and is a great start to our season.

Again Scotty lost the toss, three in a row and Mac Uni decided to bat. Great bowling from the boys really restricted the total on the first day to 282 for 8 of 82. The run rate was kept under control by a huge team effort bowling. Thanks to Hunter for manning up when his back door dam was about to burst but as we found out he let it go from the top end onto the field. Ethan Buggy and TJ put huge efforts in thankyou. Mac Uni batted on the second day for 5 overs leaving the MIG 321 to win off 72 overs. The target saw Louis McMillian saying this score was not enough. The loss of Jordy early saw TC come out and hit the ball absolutely cleanly and make his way to 40. Every batsman came out and set themselves to build a partnership. TJ boomed two huge sixes off Mac Uni's Captain and quietly at the other end Tabrat starting to build an innings. Ethan and Tab ran beautifully between wickets to place the boys into a run a ball regions. Tab continue to drive majestically finding the gap at ease and look well past his years. Bradley pulled up lame and was run out by his runner and we were looking a little jittery. Matt Anderson played a little cameo with a cramping Tabrat. They took us to within inches of the 321. Hunter strode to the wicket 6 runs off the last and 2 wickets to spare. A three off the first and singles off the next ball a dot a single we needed 1 off two balls. H boomed it just outside the circle and one run brought a brilliant team victory. Every first player should be very proud of themselves and this brings the start to our season and we will build and work harder to improve each week.

2nd Grade Rd 3 vs Mac Uni

Mac Uni 9/282(dec) def WCC 166 & 8/107

2nd grade played away at Northern oval against...yep...mac uni. t. bourke lost the toss (i think) and they elected to bat.

lenny jones (2-54) and angus opened the bowling and the boys were off to a good start, maintaining pressure and taking early wickets, mac uni were 3-30. pressure was still being mantained and the 4th wicket was taken for about 70. however mac uni put together a strong partnership (one getting 100... the other making 82) and things started to turn into a long day. billy green (2-46) sneaked a couple of wickets before captain tim bourke took the ball himself and decided to bowl of the long run!!!! and took 3for...making his figures 3 for 39 and closing out their innings as they declared 9/282. cuz and fred then batted out 4 overs to be none for 11 over night.

continuing from the small start made on day 1, cuz (with the aid of a runner) and fred went out, as the boys tried to work together to reach what was a fair total. this proved very difficult as wickets fell consistantly, cuz the only to show any resistance, as we slipped to about 6-30. momentum was only found when billy and young dan mckenna (who also bowled 12 overs, 5 maidens for 24 runs) put together a partnership each reaching 40, and assistance from burrows and dom before being all out for 166 (no thanks to one of their openers taking 8for).

being sent back in...and with a sniff of quickly chasing down the difference we again lost early wickets and found ourselves again on the back foot. things looked shakey untill lenny (44) and jigga (20 odd??) were able to bat out about 20 overs together and save what could have been an embaressing outright loss.

3rd Grade Rd 3 vs Mac Uni

Mac Uni 195 drew WCC 0/0

Having taught Macquarie Uni's ex-3rd grade captain a lesson about shooting from the lip (see the Ford Factor article on www.mucc.org.au), I don't want to say too much about our third round match against the Students. With the scheduled day 2 washed out, we're hopeful the match will go into a third day some time in late November.

On day 1, Josh Young led the bowling attack with figures of 5/41. Craig Pecar, Ryan Dunn and Ross Anderson also bowled well in restricting Mac Uni to 195. Our fielding was generally pretty good with a couple of spectacular catches by Tom Kelly and Ross Anderson. We can always improve in the fielding department and the best way to do that is to get to training. The training turn out by third grade has generally been pretty poor compared with last year and other grades this year. Some individuals in particular need to lift their game in that regard. They know who they are.

On Mike Pawley Oval, you're always going to get a partnership if the batsmen bat sensible. For Mac Uni it was only their number 10 and 11 that applied themselves as we went a bit flat in the field after tea (again, training!!). Their partnership of 75 for the last wicket denied us the opportunity to chase the runs on day 1. But all in all, I was happy to be chasing only 195.

The day 2 report is a cut and paste job from the rounds 1 and 2 match reports. This time we played on Sunday while every other team enjoyed brillant sunshine on Saturday. At midday Sunday it bucketed down. By 2.00pm it was still pouring and the ground was flooded and the day's play abandoned. Game over??? Watch this space.

Thanks to Rosco, Phlenny, Pecs and Bushy for helping pack up the sightscreens etc away in the pouring rain while the rest were nowhere to be seen. My fine book is filling up fast!

4th Grade Rd 3 vs Mac Uni

Mac Uni 8/300 def (outright) WCC 123 & 171

Warringah 4's turned up to the students home ground that seemed to look an ok deck until it was poked and revieled a soft, crusty surface that was anyones guess to how it would play. We lost the toss and were sent in to field for the day. Simon (Gower) Cleary opened up and brought us the first breakthrough in about the 4th over. Good start.

The team we were up against were full of experienced players who still produced the skills that could rattle many teams in alot higher grades. Angus Jackett on debut collected our second wicket with Mac uni at 50. With a wicket that initially looked like crumbling early surprised all when it started to come good in uni's favour. The students churned out a grand total of 8 for 300 before calling it quits. A.Jackett (AKA Trousers) was great on debut ending with 2 for 37 off 10. This was also achieved whilst playing the entire match with a torn tendon in his hamstring. (No pain four balls!) Other performances included Cleary 1 for 16 off 6, Wightley 2 for 59, Alexander 2 for 40 and Kay 1 for 30.

Our innings with the willow began well with Grobs and White until the young fellar was given a poor decsion of caught behind leaving us 1/28 at the end of day1. Day 2, and we were confident of chasing the generous total set for us. I didn't happen.

Grobs was our best with 40, T.Kay battered well for 31 and other contributions came from R. Curry and J. Costain. We were outplayed by an expereienced attack.

As there was plenty of time and overs to go in the day we were put back in. The boys were told to make good use of the time in the middle for extra match practise. Once again the openers started strongly with grobs making 25 and White, 20. From their the application to most peoples innings was lost, and wickets seemed to fall at a constant rate. Gravies 38 was going along fine until he fell victim to another poor decsion by the black and whites. The outright looked in the bag for the students until Trousers and Alexander came together in a last ditch final wicket attempt to deny uni of 10 points. The boys showed guts, heart and levels of determination lacking from their older, more experienced teammates. Unfortunatley Alexander recieved a delivery 6 balls before the end of the days play that was basically a mully grubber and was bowled to end the match. The benchmark has been set and the boys know what level of cricket has to be played in order to make this season's finals.
